Indian Badminton coach Gopichand Pullela has said that he recommended HS Prannoy for the Arjuna Award. Earlier, BAI on Friday said that Prannoy was not recommended on the basis of disciplinary grounds.

Prannoy had slammed BAI on June 2 for not recommending his name for the Arjuna Award. He wrote in a tweet, “Same old story. The guy who has medals in CWG and Asian Championships not even recommended by Association. And the guy who was not there on any of these major events recommended, ” in the end, he had used hashtags of waah and this country is a joke (“#waah,#thiscountryisajoke”).

BAI had recommended Chirag Shetty, Sameer Verma and Satwik Sairaj instead of Prannoy.

Besides, Prannoy holds the credit of being the only third Indian who has won men’s singles at the Asian Badminton Championships. It seems that BAI is ignorant of the fact that coach Pullela has recommended Pranoy for the award. But the nomination has been already sent to the Govt. on June 3.

Former All England champion and recipient of the Khel Ratna award, Gopichand has confirmed his recommendation. However, he has said that he didn’t know the disciplinary issues against Prannoy. He further said that as a Khel Ratna awardee, he has the right to recommend a player for the Arjuna award and he did the same.

In an interview with TOI on Saturday, Gopichand said, “Only yesterday (June 19), we came to know about the disciplinary issues. Since Prannoy was upset at not being recommended on June 2. I thought I could help him as a Khel Ratna”.
