Dennis Ralston was one of the greatest players to set foot on the court. He was a five-time Grand Slam champion who helped solidify America’s stance in the competition across the board. At the age of 78, Ralston passed away yesterday.

The American was one of the most incredible players on court. Ralston won 41 titles in his career and retired in 1977. He was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1987. Moreover, he was an active part of the movement which helped usher in the ‘Open Era.’ The American was a force to be reckoned with who will be missed dearly.

Even after a long and incredibly successful career, Ralston continued stay in touch with tennis. In addition, he spent decades coaching some of the greatest players. This includes the likes of Chris Evert, Roscoe Tanner, Yannick Noah and Gabriela Sabatini

Further, Ralston coached the America’s Davis Cup team from 1972-75. He was at the helm when the U.S won the 1972 title after defeating Romania in a tight final. In the past decade, he remained on the teaching staff at the Grey Rock Tennis Club in Austin and continued to impart his knowledge.

The likes of Billie Jean King, Chris Evert, Gabriela Sabatini and countless others expressed their sorrow upon hearing the news of Ralston’s passing.
