Gukesh D wins 34th Cannes Open chess


34th Cannes Open chess just concluded yesterday. Cannes Open chess is 9-round Swiss tournament, which took place from 17-23 February 2020 in Cannes, France. Young chess prodigy of India, Gukesh D lead the Indian challenge in this event.

Second youngest person in history to qualify for the title of Grandmaster Norm, Gukesh D showed consistent performance through out the event. He made winning start of this event after winning 2 consecutive matches. In 3rd round match he shared point with joie, sebastien.
in 4th round match, Gukesh D came back strongly after defeating Rakotomaharo, Fy Antenaina.

In 5th round, He faced tough challenge from compatriot Harshavardhan G B . As a result, that match finishes with a draw. In 6th round match, Gukesh D.back to winning ways after defeating Degraeve, Remy. In 7th round match, Gukesh shares point with higher ranked Chinese Zeng, Chongsheng. In 8th round match, Gukesh outplayed Di Nicolantonio, Lucas. After 8 rounds, Gukesh D scored impressive 6.5 points and shares lead along with Zeng, Chongsheng and Barseghyan, Harutyun. But final 9th round match results decided the winner.

In 9th round match, Gukesh scored superb win over overnight leader Barseghyan, Harutyun. and another overnight leader, Zeng, Chongsheng shares point with GM Antal, Gergely. Thanks to this victory, Gukesh scored impressive 7.5 points after final 9 rounds and clear winner of this edition Cannes Open.

Interesting fact,its 2nd consecutive title for young Gukesh D in 2 events. Back to back Confidence boosting title win , would help him to produce better performance in coming days as well.
