Sunisa Lee breaks her silence on relationship controversy with Jaylin Smith

Sunisa Lee had earlier even claimed that a group of people shouted racist slurs and told them to “go back to where they came from".

Sunisa Lee and her boyfriend Jaylin Smith

Tokyo Olympics gold medal winner Sunisa Lee has been time and again speaking out about racist comments she’s received on social media about her relationship with Jaylin Smith. Lee went public with her boyfriend on December 26, posting a video on TikTok and an Instagram post with the American football linebacker in matching hoodies.

Smith also posted similar photos of himself and Lee a day earlier, with several supportive messages. However, this wasn’t the case with each person in the comments section as the couple received backlash over their interracial relationship.

But one of the users won Lee’s heart with a heartwarming message for the 18-year-old. “I know that Sunisa will be judged by certain eyes in the Hmong Community because her man is Black. LOVE is LOVE, no matter what race or gender you are. Keep doing you QUEEN,” a user @alixphom wrote.

“This makes me so happy. I’ve received [sic] so much hate,” Lee wrote with a crying emoji. “They support me when it’s beneficial for them, never when it comes to my happiness. Thank you!” the American gymnast added with a pink heart emoji.

“Really thankful for the support”

In one of her recent media interactions, the teenager thanked everyone who has been supporting her in these tough times. She also talked about her current plans of competing in college competitions, followed by the upcoming National Championships.

“I don’t know. I mean we’re really happy. I don’t think there is anything more to that and it should just be normalized…Yeah, I have gotten a lot of support and I’m really thankful,” she told TMZ Sports.

“Right now, I am just focusing on the college gymnastics we compete in every weekend. So, I am really excited about that. And the upcoming National Championships is the goal and we want those rings,” Lee added.
