The newly crowned Grand Slam champion, Dominic Thiem, has officially withdrawn from Paris Masters. The ATP 1000 event is scheduled to start from tomorrow. Further, the likes of Rafael Nadal and Diego Schwartzman will be seen in action here. However, the World No.3 has taken his name off this list as he was held back due to a foot injury.

In the quarter-finals of Vienna Open, Andrey Rublev vanquished the defending champion, Thiem, in straight sets. Thiem, the 2nd seed of the tournament was ousted 7-6(5), 6-2. The duo were incredibly competitive in the first set.

However, as the 2nd set progressed, Thiem’s level of play could be seen dropping. The Austrian seemed to be at odds with something. In the same vein, he was bothered by his foot which made it immensely difficult for him to move around the court. At every changeover, Thiem tried to tend to his foot injury but continued to remain in pain throughout the match.

In his post-match press conference, Thiem stated that he “wasn’t sure” about playing in Paris and was yet to make the decision.

The blisters which flared up in the indoor courts of Vienna restricted the 27-year-old’s movement. Thiem later revealed that the indoor hard courts have never been kind to him. Moreover, he had suffered heretofore whenever partaking in those events. Even though the Grand Slam champion was looking a way around this, he hadn’t been successful yet.

The Austrian revealed through his twitter feed that he won’t be contending to Paris this year. “As many of you already have seen, unfortunately, I had to withdraw from the Paris Bercy Masters this year. Due to an injury on my right foot. My team and I decided that it is best to rest this week to be fully recovered for the ATP Nitto Finals,” he said.

Last year, Dominic reached the round of 16 in Paris, but faced defeat at the hands of Grigor Dimitrov 6-3, 6-2. Thiem was looking to add more points to his tally, but won’t be able to do so.

Thiem is likely to close 2020 out with appearance at the Nitto ATP Tour Finals, the last tournament of the year.
