On his 37th birthday today, we have collected some interesting facts about him.

Sushil Kumar is India’s most popular freestyle wrestler. He has been making India proud since he was 14. He is one of the most successful wrestler of our country as he won two consecutive Olympic medals at 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Olympics and the first Indian wrestlers to receive the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award. He also carried the Indian flag at the opening ceremony of 2012 London Olympics.

Sushil Kumar was born in wrestling family in a small village Baprola near Najafgarh in South West Delhi. Sushil gets wrestling inspiration from his father, as he was himself a wrestler and his cousin Sandeep, who also trained to become a professional wrestler.

His brother Sandeep stopped wrestling because of the financial condition and his family can’t afford to train two children in professional wrestling. So, Sushil get full financial support from his family to become a professional wrestler.

At the starting of his wrestling Kumar only do desi pehlwani but later his coach Satpal Singh suggested him to start freestyle wrestling to increase the chances of winning more accolades for India. Success soon followed and in 2000, he already become a Asian Junior Wrestling Champion.

In 2003, he won gold at the Asian and the Commonwealth Wrestling Championship. Then he won bronze medal in Doha Asian games in 2006. He came in a limelight when a won a bronze medal at 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Though out his Wrestling career he has achieved so much. Here is some of his top achievements.

  • Sushil Kumar’s first win was a gold medal at the World Cadet Games, 1998.
  • The most notable achievements of Sushil are the two Olympic medals, a silver medal at the London Olympics, 2012 and a bronze medal at Beijing Olympics, 2008.
  • In 2010 World wrestling championships, Moscow, Kumar won the world title in the 66 kg category becoming the first Indian to secure the World title in wrestling.
  • He won gold in 2010 Commonwealth Games held in Delhi in the freestyle 66 kg category.
  • Sushil added another feather to his cap by winning gold in the 74 kg category at the 2014 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow.
  • He was awarded with the “Arjuna Award” in 2005 and Padma Shri in 2011 by the Indian Government for his sincere efforts towards wrestling
  • At the Commonwealth Wrestling Championship of 2017, Sushil bagged a gold medal in the 74 kg freestyle category. In 2018, Sushil competed at the Commonwealth Games 74 kg freestyle category and bagged a gold medal.

Some interesting facts about our Champion-

  1. Currently, he is an employee at Indian Railways as assistant commercial manager.
  2. Sushil Kumar does not eat non vegetarian food and has campaigned for PETA’s Go VEGETARIAN CAMPAIGN.
  3. When Sushil Kumar was staying and practising at Chhatrasal stadium , his family used to send him cans of milk, tins of ghee and cooked vegetables even though they were not financially strong.
  4. In 2012, he refused to appear in a surrogate advertising for a liquor brand believing that it would send a wrong message to the youth.
