Harry Kane scored is 200th and 201st club goals as he led Tottenham to a 3-1 win. Kane ended his goal drought of 3 games as he got a second half double to boost Tottenham’s Europe surge. Tottenham were coming into the game on the back of North London derby win against Arsenal. 2 successive wins now, will help their fight towards qualification for Europa league.
The result was Newcastle’s 2nd successive loss as they remain in the bottom half of Premier League. Son gave the lead to the away side in the 28th minute. Newcastle had early chances through Saint-Maximin, but they could not take it. It was a pretty even game. Son fired ahead for Tottenham immediately after the cooling break as he slotted past Dubravka.
It was a mistake by Schar to start with as Lo Celso teed up the South Korean to fire his 18th of the campaign. Tottenham came close to adding their 2nd through Son again but were denied. Newcastle would have felt hard done by as they created numerous chances but could not score. Especially, when Gayle’s header came back off the post in the closing stages of first half.
The game was in the balance at the half time whistle. Barring one mistake at the back which cost them the goal, Steve Bruce’s side did well to match their opponents. The Magpies did finally make it count soon as the second half started. Matt Ritchie scored a screamer to level the terms, 10 minutes into the second half. He blasted his effort past Lloris as Tottenham were stunned.
However, Newcastle’s joy lasted only 4 minutes as Kane edged Spurs ahead with a landmark goal. The England and Spurs captain headed his 200th club goal from close range from Bergwijn’s cross. The goal was his 184th for Tottenham. Saint-Maximin was impressive throughout the game for the home side as he came close in the second half as well but could not make a mark.
Newcastle were eventually punished as Kane grabbed his second of the night to seal the 3 points for Tottenham. The goal came from another close-range header by Kane in the dying minutes.
The win for Tottenham took them to 7th on 55 points, 1 point behind 6th placed Wolves. Mourinho’s men continue their resurgence towards Europa League with two consecutive wins, On the other hand, Newcastle as a result of 2 successive losses, remain in 13th with virtually nothing to play for in the closing matchdays.
Next up for Tottenham is a home game against Leicester while Newcastle visit Brighton.
