Roger Federer is arguably one of the greatest tennis players to ever grace the court. The Swiss has won 20 Grandslam titles during his illustrious career. He has had several great wins but at the same time, has suffered a few agonizing losses. One of his toughest and most heartbreaking loss was against Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon 2019 in the finals.

Federer had two match point opportunities in the fifth set but could not convert either of them. As a result, Djokovic eventually fought his way through the match, claiming the title. However, Gilles Simon has defended Roger Federer over his loss against Djokovic and believes that the Swiss had played and won enough in his career and should not be questioned for his choices.

Recently, Alize Lim had invited Gilles Simon on the show Major Talk, where he spoke about the Wimbledon 2019 final. The Frenchman stated that he finds it amusing that people still look in hindsight and say that Federer should have served and volleyed on his two match points.

“I heard it so many times, ‘Why didn’t he serve and volley against Novak when he had his two match points?’ We’re not going to start questioning Federer’s choices in the important moments, are we? If anyone knows, it’s him…Federer doesn’t question it. He played his game. He’s won a lot of Slams by doing this.” said Simon, during the interview.

Serving at 8-7 in the fifth set, Federer squandered two match point opportunities. He lost his first chance after he hit a ball long and the second chance when Djokovic produced a great passing shot. The Swiss has lost several close encounters to Djokovic despite coming agonizingly close. During US Open 2010 and 2011 semifinal, Federer had two match point opportunities on both occasions but could not convert them.
