Holger Rune excited with the prospect of training alongside Novak Djokovic
Holger Rune, world’s top ranked junior player has arranged a training session with Novak Djokovic. The 17-year old contacted the world number one through social media and managed to get a once in a lifetime opportunity of training with the Serbian.
Holger Rune won the French Open junior’s title in 2019 and has climbed over 500 spots since then. He is currently ranked 317th in the ATP Rankings. Rune reached out to Novak Djokovic on Instagram asking the Serbian if he wanted to practice with him.
“Novak Djokovic is the World No. 1,” Holger Rune told TV 2 Sport. “I wrote to him on Instagram, to be completely honest. (To check) whether he was in Monaco or in the area, because I saw that he had withdrawn from Miami. Then he wrote back,” he added.
Holger Rune went on to praise Novak Djokovic and hopes to take a set off him in their training session. “He hits the ball so clean, it’s crazy,” Rune said. “He does not miss many balls, so he is cool to train with. You get a good rhythm. You play lots of training sets. I hope he would like that (playing sets) so I can see if I can take a set from him,” he added.
I cannot play with a better player: Rune on his practice session with Djokovic
Holger Rune stated that he could not have played with a better player, and believes that his training session with Novak Djokovic will help him improve his game. “It is awesome. It also gives me confidence, because he does not (usually) train with anyone. “I cannot play with a better player. He is No. 1 in the world. It will be good sparring for me,” he added.
Rune made his debut on the ATP tour only last month, earning a wildcard to play at the Argentina Open. He also participated in the main draw of the Chile Open, where he reached the quarterfinals. “Now I have gained some experience at that level and know that the difference is not that big either,” Holger Rune said. “There are some small things with the choices they make under different situations, but I believe I can at least play with him,” he added.
