Canadian-American mixed martial artist and current ONE Lightweight World Champion, Christian Lee believes that he is the best lightweight in the entire world. Having plied his trade entirely in ONE Championship, Lee has a record of 14 wins and only 3 losses. He is currently riding a hot streak of 5 wins, and faces Timofey Nastyukhin at ONE on TNT 2 on April 14, 2021, as he defends his ONE Lightweight Championship.
Speaking in an interview with Asian MMA, Christian Lee claimed that he is the best lightweight in the world, let alone in the ONE Championship. He also addressed his upcoming bout against Timofey Nastyukhin, saying that it was ‘going to make for a great and exciting fight for the fans.’
‘I don’t want to come off as cocky‘
Christian Lee was quoted as saying, “I don’t want to come off as cocky, but I do feel that I’m the best lightweight fighter in the entire world. And that doesn’t mean just ONE Championship, that means every organization.”
Lee might be the best in ONE Championship, but in the world? – He has just fought at ONE Championship, his entire life, never tried his hands in the second best mixed martial arts promotion in the world; Bellator, let alone in the UFC. Bellator boasts one of the biggest names in the lightweight division, in the form of Patricio Freire. And, coming to UFC – there is the now retired Khabib Nurmagomedov, Dustin Poirier, Michael Chandler, Conor McGregor, Tony Ferguson, Charles Oliveira and many others, down the pecking order. Therefore, Lee claiming to be the best in the world, is a tad too much.
Speaking about his upcoming bout, Lee said, “The thing about this fight that’s exciting for me is that Timofey is, in my opinion, one of the most dangerous athletes in the lightweight division and he’s taken out some of the best names in ONE so far. He’s definitely deserving of this title shot. Just the way our styles line up, he’s a finisher, I’m a finisher, and it’s going to make for a great, exciting fight for the fans.”
