Israel Adesanya defended his middleweight championship against Yoel Romero at UFC 248. This was a match that people expected would display a highly interesting battle of styles filled with exciting striking and grappling exchanges between the two. Since Romero is regarded to be one of the greatest amateur wrestlers to ever compete in the sport of MMA, who possesses effective striking skills and one-strike knockout power.

Adesanya on the other hand, is a highly accomplished kickboxer himself; having won numerous accolades in the sport of kickboxing, prior to his transition into MMA. It was no wonder that their match was expected to be one of the most exciting MMA matchups. However, their actual match fell way short of expectations, with the “last style bender” blaming the “soldier of god” for their lackluster performance.

Their match was indeed disappointing. Both fighters adopted a highly defensive approach and refrained from engaging in prolonged striking or grappling exchanges over the course of their five-round bout. Adesanya was subsequently awarded the unanimous decision victory. While many complained about the quality of the match, Adesanya went on to defend his UFC Middleweight belt against Paulo Costa at UFC 253; and beat the then-undefeated KO artist Costa with an amazingly one-sided TKO round two.

While the last stylebender has been receiving applause for his performance against Costa, many have raised questions about his match with Romero. The champ took to twitter, tweeting, “Fun fact: I’ve never watched that fight back. Romero ruined it”; thus accusing Romero of ruining the fight.

Romero has now taken to Twitter in order to fire back at Adesanya’s accusations. “I still standing in the middle of the cage waiting for you to fight #theoeopleschamp”, he tweeted.

He also tweeted, “I was watching highlight of my fights. I have highlight of every person I fight. I win some, I lose some but guess who don’t have no highlight of me in the fight? #iluhju #noforgetyoel”, clearly lashing out the last stylebender.

With Adesanya set to take on Jan Blanchowicz for the light heavyweight title, it will be interesting to see how he responds.
