The International Cricket Council (ICC) has granted both ODI and Test status to each and every full-member women’s team. The decision means that countries like Bangladesh, Zimbabwe and Afghanistan can now play women’s tests. The three teams now join India, Australia, England, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies, New Zealand, Ireland and the Netherlands.

It is noteworthy that Bangladesh women’s cricket only began as late as in 2011 when they got ODI status and beat the United States of America in their debut match. They then went from strength to strength and have made waves with their cricketing abilities. They even defeated India in the final of the Asia Cup in 2018 which was held in Malaysia to get their hands on the trophy for the first time.

Talking of the news of the grant of the status, “It was decided that Test and ODI status shall be permanently awarded to all Full Member women’s teams,” ICC was quoted as saying by BDcrictime.

Another fact worth noting is that Bangladesh haven’t played in a single ODI World Cup beforehand despite their recent strong performances. However, this news could open up the doors to feature in future World Cups. They have played in four T20 World Cup before and might continue in ODIs in the same vein.

Two Bangladeshi women cricketers have also taken part in the Women’s T20 Challenge conducted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India – Jahanara Alam and Samla Khatun. This development comes as good news for Bangladesh and it could open up avenues for a brighter future.
