In a dramatic finish, India and Russia are declared joint winners of FIDE Chess Olympiad. This is for the first time Chess Olympiad held in an online format by FIDE.

In an unpredicted turn of events, India and Russia were awarded with the Chess Olympiad Gold Medal on Sunday. Initially, it was declared that India has lost the final round, however, after lodging a complaint about internet server failure, the decision was reversed.

How all this happened

India and Russia, both teams went neck to neck in Chess Olympiad final on Sunday. But due to poor internet connection or a possible chess.com server error Nihal Sarin and Divya Deshmukh lost their game on time. Both of them were in good position when they lost internet connection.

India filed an official appeal, saying that they lost time due to poor internet connection. Then FIDE investigated the issue, when it seemed that India has lost the final, FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich announced India and Russia as Joint winners of FIDE Chess Olympiad.
