The 1st T20I between India and Australia ran into a controversial moment when India decided to replace Ravindra Jadeja who was hit on the helmet with a ‘concussion substitute’ in the form of Yuzvendra Chahal. The latter then went on to come up with a match-winning 3-wicket haul to turn the game in India’s favor and bag the Man of the Match award.

Jadeja was hit on the helmet by a Mitchell Starc bouncer in the last over while he was already struggling with a hamstring injury. He continued batting however, and scored well off the remaining balls. At the innings break, India informed that they would replace Jadeja who was concussed with Chahal. This led to a few words being exchanged between match referee David Boon and Australia head-coach Justin Langer.

‘They let us know that a doctor had ruled Jadeja out’

Aaron Finch

After the conclusion of the 1st T20I, Australian skipper Aaron Finch was asked about the concussion substitution. “They were letting us know their doctor had ruled Jadeja out with concussion and you aren’t challenging a medical expert in that regard,” Finch said.

Finch then spoke about what went wrong for Australia in the match. “We probably leaked a few too many runs at the end and then in the middle phase struggled to heat boundaries. Then while chasing, we didn’t hit too many boundaries in the 6-over period,” he added.
