India vs Australia: India secure consolation victory in the third ODI to prevent 0-3 whitewash
India claimed a consolation win by 13 runs in the 3rd ODI against Australia to end the ODI series 2-1 in favor of the Aussies at the Manuka Oval in Canberra. In a chase of 303, Australia looked to be done and out with 6 wickets having gone and over 90 runs to get. However, the in-form Glenn Maxwell rubbed salt into India’s already existent wounds from the first two losses with another astonishing innings of power-hitting.
Just as he was looking to take the game away from India, a trademark Jasprit Bumrah yorker sent back the all-rounder. The rest of the Indian bowlers then applied the choke to pick up the remaining wickets and guide India to a thrilling win.
Hardik-Jadeja stand takes India past 300
Earlier, having won the toss and chosen to bat first, India got off to a bad start as they lost openers Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill after starts. Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul followed suit as well. However, a fluent half-century by skipper Virat Kohli rescued India before he nicked one off Josh Hazlewood’s bowling to get out for the third time to the same bowler.
As India were staring at a score of below 250, Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja struck explosive knocks to take their side past 300. Both got past their half-centuries and in quick time as well, as the last 7 overs yielded more than 90 runs.
Finch, Maxwell knocks go in vain
In the chase, India picked up a wicket in the Powerplay for the first time in the series as debutant T Natarajan sent back Marnus Labuschagne who was promoted to open in David Warner’s absence. Steve Smith suffered a rare failure as he feathered one to the wicket-keeper off Shardul Thakur’s bowling. The wickets kept coming for India in regular intervals as Jadeja sent back Aaron Finch for 75.
Just as it looked over for Australia, Glenn Maxwell came up with an exhibition of hitting to score a half-century to swing the game in Australia’s favor. There seemed to be a twist in the tale towards the end as Bumrah castled the all-rounder. And a twist it was as the Indian bowlers tightened the screws and held their nerve to secure the win by a margin of 13 runs.
