Steve Smith celebrates his hundred

Steve Smith roared back to form with a scintillating hundred on a fascinating Day 2’s play at the Sydney Cricket Ground for Australia against India. His overnight partner Marnus Labuschagne on the other hand, fell 9 runs short of a well-deserved century. The Australians then suffered an implosion to get bowled out for 338 when they could have easily gotten a bigger score.

At the end of the day’s play, India found themselves trailing by 242 runs with 8 wickets in the bag. Day 3 is bound to be very crucial and the pair of Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane who have shown remarkable patience hold the key in deciding the outcome of the game.

Smith scores 100; Jadeja and Gill shine for India

Ravindra Jadeja

Earlier, resuming from their overnight score of 166/2, Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith continued batting confidently. There were two short rain delays and the Indian bowlers made to toil to break the partnership. It arrived when Ravindra Jadeja had the former caught. The Aussie batters who followed couldn’t offer much support to Smith at the other end who kept batting assuredly.

As India kept chipping away with wickets, Smith tried to accelerate and was the last wicket to fall after he was caught short of the crease by a direct-hit from Jadeja. The latter was also the pick of the bowlers as he picked up four wickets.

In reply, the Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill began well before what was looking like a dangerous partnership was broken when the former offered a return catch to Josh Hazlewood. Gill continued unfazed and got to his maiden 50 before getting dismissed by Pat Cummins. Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane then ensured Australia didn’t pick up more wickets by defending nearly every ball as India finished on 96/2, 242 runs behind.
