India’s batsmen shone on Day 5 to help pull off a draw from a precarious position in the third Test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground. After Ajinkya Rahane’s early dismissal, Rishabh Pant and Cheteshwar Pujara came up with superbly contrasting knocks to keep the scoreboard ticking and even give India a chance of pulling off an unlikely victory.
After their dismissals however, Australia were back on top and it was left to Hanuma Vihari and Ravichandran Ashwin to bat out the day with more than 3 hours to go. The two showed incredible grit and battled injuries to stay unbeaten till the end and ensured the last Test at The Gabbe would be the decider.
Words exchanged between Paine and Ashwin
There was a lot of talk during the course of the match between Australian skipper Tim Paine and Ashwin. Earlier, while Ashwin was receiving treatment for his injuries, Paine told him to ‘Get on with it’. Further, towards the end of the day when the Indian spinner withdrew from facing a Nathan Lyon delivery, Paine said, “Can’t wait to get you to The Gabba, Ash“.
Ashwin gave it back to Paine saying, “Can’t wait to get you to India as well. It will be your last series.” The Aussie skipper was visibly annoyed by Ashwin’s reply and told him “At least my teammates like me” before hurling an expletive at him which led the all-rounder to withdraw from batting again. This ‘sledging’ incident has gone viral since then.
