Former England captain Michael Vaughan has given his say on who the better player of spin among modern day greats Virat Kohli and Joe Root is through a tweet on his handle. The tweet came just hours after Kohli was dismissed for just 11 runs by spinner Dom Bess while Root had got to his double century the day before in a knock that saw him negotiate the spinners with ease.
India meanwhile, now find themselves in a spot of bother as they’ve lost 6 wickets, having added just 257 runs on the board. A major part of the scoring was thanks to Rishabh Pant‘s counter-attacking knock of 91 and Cheteshwar Pujara‘s assured innings of 73. Washington Sundar and Ravichandran Ashwin now find themselves at the crease and face the task of avoiding the follow-on for which 121 more runs are required.
Michael Vaughan’s tweet on Virat Kohli and Joe Root
Former England captain, Michael Vaughan took to Twitter today to explain using stats that Joe Root was statistically a better play of spin than Virat Kohli. He wrote, “Joe Root aves 70.7 v spin, Kohli 69.0… But against off-spin specifically: Root 71.2, Kohli 53.1. !!! So Root is factually a better player of spin than Virat… #Fact #INDvENG (sic).”
The tweet has since then, gone viral with Indian fans pointing out that Root plays most of his cricket in England where spinners don’t get much purchase. But, England fans have pointed out that Kohli doesn’t have to play some of the best spinners in the world like Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja whom he has in his own team.
