In a surprising turn of events, Indian skipper Virat Kohli was bowled out for a duck in the first innings of the second Test. Much was expected from the skipper who looked in fine touch in the fourth innings of the second Test. But instead, he succumbed without scoring in what was his 150th Test innings. Kohli was cleaned up by a stunning delivery from Moeen Ali.
The Englishman castled Kohli with a flighted delivery. The delivery drifted in the air to deceive the Indian captain before t hit the footmarks on the pitch to turn square. Having hit the rough, the ball went through the gap between Kohli’s bat and pad to hit the top of his off stump. It was a fabulous delivery on a turning track to outfox India’s best batsman going around.
Virat Kohli’s reaction
Kohli couldn’t believe that the ball turned to such an extent as he held his ground. Following his denial to leave the ground, the third umpire checked the dismissal which clearly showed the ball hitting the stumps. It is the second time in back to back innings that Kohli has been bowled. And it is also the first time since 2012 that he has been bowled out by an off-spinner.
The pitch for the second day is looking like the traditional Chepauk pitch. And India seems to be falling prey to a trap of their own making. After a solid partnership, the England spinners have struck twice in quick succession to add some thrill to the session. Cheteshwar Pujara and Kohli have been dismissed. And the onus is now on two Mumbai batsmen, Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane, to stable the ship. Rohit is on a roll having scored 80 off 78 before lunch.
