Indian weightlifter put up a good show at recently concluded Qatar International Cup. Indian weightlifters has won 1 Gold, 1 Silver and a Bronze medal at the Olympic Qualifying silver level event. On first day Mirabai Chanu won Gold medal with a lift of 194kg. Chanu’s personal best is 201kg which she set in Septmber at World Championship in Thailand.
Youth Olympics gold medalist, a product of Khelo India youth games, Jeremy Lalrinnunga smashed as many as 27 records to win silver medal. In his top class performance he lifted 306kg to break his own youth world record in 67kg category. he lifted 140kg in snatch, 166kg in clean and jerk.
With his lift he broke 12 international record – 3 youth world, three youth Asian, six commonwealth records and 15 national records – five youth national, five junior national and five senior national.
Earlier this year, he lifted 297kg (134kg+163kg) at Asian championship followed by 296kg at the world championship. He is a bright future in long run and will prove to be a top medal prospect at Paris Olympics in 2024.
Rakhi Halder won bronze medal to create two national records in women’s 64kg. She obliterated the senior national record with a lift her personal best lift of 218kg (95kg + 123kg). She won Gold at commonwealth championship with a lift of 264kg (94kg+ 120kg). But now she has created two new national record in both snatch and total lift.
India can send overall four lifters to Tokyo Olympics, two in men’s and two in women’s category. Currently Mirabai Chanu has best chance to qualify, Jeremy and Rakhi have a tough task ahead. But with best facility provided to then we can hope their Tokyo qualification.
