Tokyo Olympics 2020: Indian women’s hockey team reaches the knockouts for the first time in 41 years, will face Australia in the quarterfinal

The Indian women’s hockey team create history at the Tokyo Olympics by reaching the quarterfinal of the Games for the first time since the introduction of the format. The Indian team finished 4th in the inaugural 1980 Moscow Games and have never played a knockout match at the Olympics ever since. But after 41 years, they have finally reached the knockouts at Tokyo 2020.

The Indian team finished 4th in Pool A with 6 points in 5 matches. They finished behind Netherlands, Germany and Great Britain and were ahead of Ireland and South Africa. They beat South Africa in the last group stage match 4-3 and needed Great Britain to defeat Ireland, which they did.

The women’s hockey team has blown both hot and cold throughout the tournament with moments of brilliance at times. They played a very poor game against Germany but bounced back with a solid win over South Africa on Saturday, ensuring a quarterfinal spot.

The Indian team will face the mighty Australia in the quarterfinals at Tokyo Olympics on August 2. Australia topped the Pool B and are undefeated in the tournament. So far, only 1 goal has been scored against them while they have scored 13 goals in 5 matches.

The Aussies will go in as the favorites to win the match and the Indian team will have to play at their very best and hope the Aussies have a day day, to come anywhere near to beating them. Nevertheless, the Indian hockey team has went a step ahead and will want to express themselves on the turf and give their best.
