South African pacer Dale Steyn who made himself unavailable and Parthiv Patel who announced his retirement were also among those who were released. Patel is currently a talent scout with the Mumbai Indians (MI) franchise but last played for RCB where he wasn’t given much chances to shine. The wicket-keeper batsman was one of their better players in the 2019 edition of the tournament but didn’t get a single game in 2020.

Parthiv Patel takes a dig at RCB

After his name featured on the list of released players for RCB, Parthiv Patel took to Twitter to post a cryptic message saying, “An absolute honour to be released after being retired . … thank you @RCBTweets (sic).” While some have stated that the tweet is merely one meant to be taken humorously while others have interpreted it as a dig at RCB for not releasing him prior and not giving him chances as well.

It is noteworthy that such retired players do feature in the list of released players as was seen with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Shane Watson and Mumbai Indians (MI) and Lasith Malinga.
