Faf du Plessis‘ knock today for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) proved to be the difference in a high-scoring thriller on a batting beauty of a wicket. The South African came up with an assured knock at the top of the order that saw him end on 95* off just 60 balls. The 36-year-old perfectly anchored the innings and opened up while taking calculated risks when needed.
His knock was the most important in CSK’s score of 220 which was posted. After KKR were then restricted to 31/5, it seemed like wrapping up the match would be a formality. But Andre Russell and Pat Cummins struck half-centuries to keep KKR alive till the very last over, where the latter ran out of partners with 20 runs required to win. The loss was KKR’s third of the season while CSK notched up their third win of the season.
Faf du Plessis reacts to CSK’s win
Faf du Plessis was named the Man of the Match for his efforts and he said, “This was the most fluent I’ve felt so far. Felt the previous game things started to get better. Tonight was another step. It’s about the rhythm of the flow of the hands. Few games before this and even tonight spinners were the best bowlers. Even Jadeja bowled well for us. The ball just grips a bit. We thought the seamers from the other side we can catch up.”
Speaking about his opening partner Ruturaj Gaikwad who also struck a fifty, du Plessis said, “He’s a fantastic young talent. Those first couple of balls you can feel on edge as a batter. Beautiful to see him trust the timing and the technique. For a small guy he hits the ball a long way.”
“Been very lucky playing under MS for a long time. He knows what he’s doing, pleasure to play under him. There was dew tonight and then it was a proper batter’s game. That’s when Russel’s at his dangerous when he’s got nothing to lose,” du Plessis signed off.
CSK’s next match is against Royal Challengers Bangalore on the 25th of April.
