IPL 2021: Run-fest in Mumbai ends with a Punjab Kings win as Sanju Samson’s century goes in vain
The Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai saw an absolute run-fest as Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) were involved in a thriller. The two sides had played out a similar nail-biter in last year’s famous encounter in Sharjah where Rahul Tewatia emerged as the hero. It was yet another similar story here as sixes were hit at will and the bowlers found the going extremely difficult.
Early on, PBKS were put in to bat by RR as both teams decided to go with some of their new signings at the auction such as Chetan Sakariya (RR), Riley Meredith, Jhye Richardson and Shahrukh Khan (PBKS). PBKS did not get off to a good start as they lost Mayank Agarwal early. However, skipper KL Rahul and Chris Gayle ensured that the scoreboard kept ticking with a brisk partnership,
Deepak Hooda and KL Rahul make merry; Sanju Samson explodes
After Chris Gayle was dismissed by the part-time spin of Riyan Parag, Deepak Hooda walked in to bat although PBKS had Nicholas Pooran in the shed. The move to promote Hooda worked wonders as the Baroda all-rounder came up with an explosive knock that flattened the RR bowling. After Hooda’s fifty and dismissal, KL Rahul continued going and was finally dismissed for 91 by some good fielding from Rahul Tewatia.
In the chase, it all started awry for RR as they lost their openers quickly and Sanju Samson also saw Jos Buttler get out to a beauty from Jhye Richardson. However, the debutant skipper kept hitting the boundaries and sixes with support first from Shivam Dube and then Riyan Parag. Even as the wickets kept falling at the other end, the captain was assured in his hitting as he produced one of the best knocks of his career. However, Arshdeep Singh held his nerve in the end and sealed victory by dismissing Samson off the last ball when 5 runs were required.
