The Swiss Star is familiar with rising from the dead and scripting remarkable turnovers in a tennis match which he manages to achieve using his mind more than his racquet.

However, this time it was the racquet that he had to focus on mainly in order to improve his first-serve percentage from 69% to 78% which helped him to get a grip on the match after being routed in the opening set by Rublev.

“I think for me it was important to really focus on my serve. I started to serve better, to mix more, to get more free points, to start to push him a little bit more, put him on defense a little bit,” Wawrinka said.

“That’s when I knew I will have some occasion to break him. I am really happy with the victory,” he added.

Wawrinka will face Alexander Zverev in the quarter-finals of the Paris Masters. This will be the 4th time that Stan Wawrinka and Zverev fight against each other. The head to head is 3-0 for Zverev.

The last time that they squared off, Zverev won 1-6 6-3 6-4 6-2 in the quarters in Melbourne back in January 2020.
