World No.1 and No.1-seed Novak Djokovic will look to shrug off the disappointment of the US Open and start afresh as he faces local favourite Salvatore Caruso in the second round at the Italian Open 2020. The last time when he played in Rome, Djokovic was unable to breach the defence of Rafael Nadal and got defeated in the final.
So this time, the 33-year old Serb will desperately want to move one step forward and claim his 36th ATP Masters 1000 title.
Novak Djokovic vs Salvatore Caruso: Preview
Talking about the performance in the tournament so far, Djokovic received a first-round bye and is yet to step on the red clay. In the last-week concluded US Open, the 17-time Major champion looked well poised to add another Grand Slam to his kitty. However, much to his dismay, he got defaulted in the fourth round for hitting the ball to the lineswoman, thus ending his winning streak in the most bizarre way possible.
On the other hand, Salvatore Caruso stunned his higher-ranked opponent Tennys Sandgren. The 27-year old Italian brilliantly bounced back after losing the first set to get the better of Sandgren 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 in a thriller.
Novak Djokovic vs Salvatore Caruso: Head-to-Head
Prior to their meeting in Internazionali BNL d’Italia, both the players have faced each other only once. That meeting came in a third-round encounter at the last year’s Roland Garros. Djokovic had overpowered Carouso 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 in a one-sided match. So the Serb leads the head-to-head record 1-0.
Novak Djokovic vs Salvatore Caruso: Prediction
It is a no-brainer that Djokovic is again the favourite against Caruso. The contest is expected to be yet another lopsided affair, with Djokovic comfortably advancing to the next round even though Caruso will have home support by his side.
Match Prediction: Novak Djokovic defeats Salvatore Caruso comprehensively in straight sets.
