Italian Open 2020: Women’s Singles Draw Analysis, Preview and Prediction

The clay-court season kicks off on Monday in the Italian Open as top seeds battle it out in their bid to prepare for the French Open 2020.

Just 2 days after the US Open Women’s singles final the ladies will now shift their attention to the clay-court season as they battle it out in the Italian Open in preparation for Roland Garros 2020. The women’s draw boasts the likes of Simona Halep who makes her return to tennis after skipping the US Open.

The top-seeded Romanian, Halep will battle it out against the likes of Sofia Kenin, defending champion and 2nd seeded Karolina Pliskova who would be looking to get over disappointment at the US Open by doing well in the Italian Open. The draw misses the likes of the US Open 2020 champion Naomi Osaka and 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams who decided to pull out from the tournament. However, the draw looks to be interesting and we are in for an amazing week of tennis.

First Quarter

The first quarter of the draw includes the top-seeded Romanian, Simona Halep who is making a comeback on the tour alongside Petra Martic. Simona Halep has received a bye in the first round and has been given a relatively easier draw to the quarterfinals. Her first real test might come against Donna Vekic in the 3rd round. She is expected to reach the last 8 where she will face the Croatian Petra Martic.

Second Quarter

The second quarter is one of the most challenging quarters in the draw with the likes of the clay-court specialist Garbine Muguruza, Venus Williams, US Open finalist Victoria Azarenka, Kerber, 3rd seeded Sofia Kenin, 7th seeded Konta and the American teenage sensation Cori Gauff. Azarenka will be up against Venus Williams in the first round who she is expected to defeat.

Sofia Kenin, 3rd seed has a tough draw with the possibility of facing Victoria Azarenka in the 2nd round, Kerber in the 3rd round before facing Muguruza in the 4th round. Azarenka carrying on her form will upset Sofia Kenin in the 2nd round, Muguruza will prevail in the lower half of the second quarter setting up a quarterfinal clash with Garbrine Muguruza. Garbine Muguruza has a tough opening round match against Sloane Stephens of USA but she is expected to prevail in the encounter.

Third Quarter

The third quarter of the draw relatively has fewer names with an easy draw for Kiki Bertens and Elina Svitolina who makes her return to tennis to meet in the quarterfinals. Kiki Bertens’ first challenge might come against Vondrousova in the 3rd round and apart from that, it looks an easy road to the last 8 for her. The quarter has the likes of Svetlana Kuznetsova, a 2-time grand slam champion who will be looking to do well in Rome.

Fourth Quarter

The fourth quarter has the likes of defending champion and 2nd seeded Karolina Pliskova, 6th seeded Belinda Bencic, Elise Mertens and 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko. Karolina Pliskova Is expected to reach the last 8 in a comfortable fashion facing in no challenges in between. Meanwhile, Jelena Ostapenko is expected to have a good run at Rome this year as she is well prepared for the clay season after skipping the US Open. She will have to defeat the likes of Elise Mertens and Belinda Bencic to reach the last 8.

Ostapenko and Azarenka’s run will end in the last 8

In the first quarterfinals, Simona Halep is expected to beat Martic in a comfortable manner and make it to the last 4 of the tournament. In the 2nd quarterfinal, Garbrine Muguruza is expected to end Victoria Azarenka’s run at Rome and defeat her in a tough match and book a place in the last 4. The 3rd quarterfinal is an interesting matchup between Svitolina and Bertens but Elina Svitolina is expected to defeat Kiki Bertens in a hard fought game and make it to the last 4. In the last round of 8 clash, Karolina Pliskova will end Ostapenko’s run at Rome and secure the last spot in the semifinals.

First Semi final – Simona Halep vs Garbrine Muguruza

Second Semi final– Elina Svitolina vs Karolina Pliskova

Semi Finals

Garbine Muguruza will face Svitolina in the final

In the first semifinal, Muguruza will be up against Simona Halep in what promises to be a thriller. However, Muguruza will just edge past Halep in a thriller and book a place in the final. In the other semifinal, Elina Svitolina will defeat the defending champion Pliskova in another epic match and set up a final clash with Muguruza.


Garbine Muguruza will win Rome 2020 trophy

Garbrine Muguruza will overcome the 4th seeded Elina Svitolina in a hard fought battle and claim the title at Rome this year. Elina Svitolina, two time champion at Rome will just fall short in the final. Both the players are amazing players on the clay surface so it will be an interesting watch.

Prediction- Garbrine Muguruza to win the final and lift her maiden title at Rome.
