India’s series win against Australia is etched in cricket history for the sheer unprecedentedness of it, despite all the injuries and setbacks that came the visitors’ way. After a crushing defeat in the first Test match in Adelaide where they folded for 36, India’s backs were against the walls. Chances of a comeback looked slim especially after the departure of captain Virat Kohli and various other injuries.

However, India fought and they fought hard. A superb win in Melbourne fashioned by stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahane increased hopes of a series win. A rearguard to draw the third test set up for a fascinating finale at the Gabba. With a pace attack that had a combined experience of 10 matches, a stunning win ensued. While the bowlers did an excellent job, it was a second innings chase fashioned by Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara that was the difference.

Even with four months almost up since the series, it is still spoken about as one of the greatest wins for India in its history as it was a tale of young blood rising over obstacles.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan quipped recently during an interaction on Fox Cricket that there was no shame for Australia in losing to India’s third XI referring to how the visitors fielded an inexperienced line-up due to the number of injuries they had.

Australian head coach Justin Langer then took the opportunity to respond to the same saying, “I know we all joke, Vaughany (Michael Vaughan) jokes about India’s second and third XI but the truth is, in a country of one and a half billion people, who love cricket, if you make the first XI, you’re going to have a pretty tough team.”

“There will be pretty good players, and when the opportunity comes, you’ve got to be ready to grab them. We saw that exceptional young talent, they were fierce. Unfortunately, we were on the wrong side of the ledger,” he added.
