‘I could possibly get two more in’ – Kamaru Usman wants to fight two more times this year
Kamaru "The Nigerian Nightmare" Usman
Kamaru Usman is just a week away from defending his title against Jorge Masvidal in a rematch at UFC 261. The welterweight champion is hoping to finish off ‘Gamebred’ this time around .’The Nigerian Nightmare’ believes that he will have to fight quite a lot in a calendar year since time can never be got back.
Speaking in an interview with MMA Junkie, Usman said that he doesn’t want to waste time anymore. He added that he wanted to fight two more times this year, provided his body holds up.
‘We’ll see how the body holds up’ – Kamaru Usman
Usman was quoted as saying, “Just like I felt after the first fight with Masvidal, I just didn’t feel like I got my fix. I was like, ‘You know what? I’m healthy, I’m not getting any younger, why not?’ Because the one thing I can’t get back is time. Why waste this much time filming a show that I don’t end up fighting towards the end of the year.” [via MMA Junkie]
He continued, “At this rate, God willing, and if I’m blessed with the ability, I can get two more in, to be honest with you. I could get two more in, and right now that’s three in nine months. I could possibly get two more in, but we’ll see how the body holds up.” [via MMA Junkie]
Usman and Masvidal previously met at UFC 251, last year. Usman won the match via. unanimous decision, and later regretted for not being able to finish Masvidal. Masvidal had taken the fight on very short notice, stepping in place of Gilbert Burns, who later fought Usman at UFC 258, getting knocked out in the third round.
Masvidal on the other hand has not fought since that fight at UFC 251. He believes that a full fight camp this time will help achieve success and eventually upset the Nigerian.
