Kim Clijsters ready for tough challange at Cincinnati Open
Kim Clijsters comeback
Four-time Grand Slam winner Kim Clijsters announces her return to professional tennis in 2020, marking her second comeback to the sport. The 36-year-old is coming back to International tennis post her retirement. The US Open will be her first Grand Slam tournament after she announced her comeback
The three-time US Open champion (2005, 2009-10), will be playing the US Open for the first time since she stepped away from the game following the 2012 tournament. She is currently unranked.
Kim Clijsters 2009 US Open
Kim Clijsters will be looking to repeat her magic from the 2009 US Open, when she famously won the women’s singles title as a wild card. She returned from retirement, during which she became a mother. Clijsters defeated Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki in straight sets 7-5, 6-3.
There are reasons to believe that Clijsters could find success again. However, players like Naomi Osaka, Ashleigh Barty, and Bianca Andreescu won their first Grand Slam title in the last two years. The top players have struggled with consistency, and none of them have dominated. There hasn’t been a single player who won two Grand Slams in one year since Angelique Kerber in 2016. So, it will be great to see how Kim will be putting up the fight.
On top of her four Grand Slam triumphs, Clijsters won the WTA Tour Championships three times and is a former World No. 1.
