Koneru Humpy comfortably shares point with compatriot Harika Dronavalli in final round match and claimed first place of 2nd edition of Cairns Cup chess. Koneru Humpy‘s nearest opponent Alexandra Kosteniuk, the only player who had a chance to overtaken the leader suffered defeat against women’s world champion Ju Wenjun in final round match.

Thanks to this victory, world champion Ju Wenjun finishes clear 2nd position of this strong event. While Alexandra Kosteniuk shared the third fourth spot along with Mariya Muzychuk. Another decisive result of the day is, Irina Krush got her first win of this event.

Before round nine, Mariya Muzychuk and Ju Wenjun was full 1 point behind leader Humpy, but when Humpy signed a draw with Harika Dronavalli after 29 move ,Then only Alexandra Kosteniuk had a chance to catch up with the Indian.

Humpy showed consistent performance in recent times. Since September 2019, 32 year old from Vijayawada, Humpy won the first event of the Grand Prix series in Skolkovo, got second place at the second stage in Monaco, became first ever Indian winner at Women’s Word Rapid Champion and now got clear first place at super strong Cairns Cup. This remarkable run of consistent performances allowed her to overcome Ju Wenjun in the live ratings list, as she is currently in second place behind semi-inactive Hou Yifan.

For her triumph, Humpy took home a huge US$45,000 prize. Women’s world champion Ju Wenjun, who bounced back from her Saturday’s shocking loss with a win over Alexandra Kosteniuk to clinch 2nd place, got US$35,000.
