WTA Rankings 2021- Latest Women’s Tennis World Rankings post the Madrid Open 2021

Post the Madrid Open 2021, the WTA rankings see a huge shakeup. The Madrid Open champion Aryna Sabalenka moves into the Top 5 while moves back into the Top 10 courtesy her Quarter-Final appearance in Caja Magica.

Sabalenka was ranked 7th in the world before the tournament started and will now jump 3 places to take the No.4 spot. She displaces Sofia Kenin, Elina Svitolina and Bianca Andreescu, who all move a place down.

Due to her dominant outing in Madrid, where she reached the final, Ash Barty solidifies her top spot. Although Naomi Osaka was knocked early on, she doesn’t drop points due to her past performance in the tournament. Simona Halep too retains her No.3 spot despite a Round of 16 performance.

Aryna Sabalenka finally gets the better of Barty

23-year old Aryna Sabalenka was meeting No.1 seed Ash Barty for the third time in three straight tournaments. The Belarussian had lost to Barty both the times previously but it was third time lucky for her as she defeated Barty in three thrilling sets 6-0,3-6,6-4.

Sabalenka was quick of the blocks as she bageled Barty in the opening set. But soon, Barty made a strong comeback to win the second set and release pressure. In the third set, the Belarussian displayed some serious power game to close out the match.

As things stand, Barty and Sabalenka could again meet next week at the Italian Open. They are both drawn in the same quarter and could possibly collide in the quarter-final.
