An ingenious Lewis Hamilton won the Hungarian Grand Prix in dominant style, and for a record eighth time, on Sunday. He drove a tactical race to wield his 86th career win, five short of Schumacher’s record of 91.

Hamilton’s second win of the season lifted him to the top of the standings.

Hamilton seemed to be in a class of his own at the Hungaroring as he reclaimed his 90th career pole position into a prosperous victory, 8.7 secs ahead of Verstappen.

“Believe it or not, [I’m] still pushing out there, obviously particularly for the fastest lap at the end,” Hamilton said after the race.

“Whilst I was on my own for the race it was a different kind of challenge. We had great pace but it couldn’t have been without these guys that were working. We did great pit stops, great strategy and right at the end there because I was managing those mediums was perfect to get on softs and get the fastest lap.”

“I definitely feel round one [In Austria] was multiple different punches that I wasn’t perhaps ready for – but I refocused, which I do every race. I need to try and keep this up,” he further added.

There was drama before the start as Max Verstappen crashed into the barrier on his way to the grid, with the Red Bull engineers only just patching up the Dutch driver’s car in time to start the race.

Verstappen recovered from this early setback to a distant second behind the dominant Hamilton, with Racing Point’s Lance Stroll and Sebastian Vettel rounding out the top five.

Bottas battled his way up to 3rd place and caught up to Verstappen in the closing stages of the races while Lance Stroll wasn’t able to convert his P3 grid position into a podium finish, but he held on to finish in 4th place.

Hamilton finished in the points for a 36th consecutive race, and also led the 150th race of his career. He is the first driver ever to reach this total.

Hamilton and most drivers again took the knee against racism before the start.

Hamilton, the only Black driver in F1 history and its reigning champion, has worn a “Black Lives Matter” shirt at the opening three races, while all 19 of his rivals have worn shirts saying.”
