List of Orange Cap winners in each IPL Season from 2008 to 2019

When we talk of T20 cricket, the first thing that comes to our mind is a run-fest. Imagining the shortest format of the game without runs is similar to eating a dessert without sweetness. The Indian Premier League have witnessed numerous run fests over the span of 12 seasons. And all thanks to the batsmen who put their best foot forward whenever they are out in the middle.

So to recognise the efforts of the batsmen, IPL introduced the Orange Cap. The cap is donned by the batter with most runs in the league. So let’s take a look at the great batsmen who have performed brilliantly with the bat and donned the Orange Cap over the years.

2019 – David Warner (SRH), 692 runs

Sunrisers Hyderabad captain David Warner picked up from where he left off in 2017. Having missed 2018 due to a year-long ban, Warner returned with all guns blazing and exploded on the bowlers as he barely squeezed his side into the playoffs. The explosive Australian opener hammered 692 runs in 12 games at a daunting average of 69.20 including a ton and eight half-centuries. Warner scored 57 boundaries and 21 maximums in the season, as he bagged his third Orange Cap before he left to join the Australian camp for World Cup preparations.

2018 – Kane Williamson (SRH), 735 runs

In the absence of captain David Warner, the team management handed the reigns to New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson and the Kiwi rewarded them handsomely for showing faith in him. Williamson amassed 735 runs from 17 matches in his first IPL season as skipper and took his side to the final, only to lose against Chennai Super Kings. Playing in his own classy way, Williamson hammered 64 boundaries and 28 sixes as he scored at an average of 52.50. With the great display of batting, Williamson proved his ability to score freely across formats.

2017 – David Warner (SRH), 641 runs

Australia opener David Warner was unstoppable in IPL 2017 as he hammered any bowler he went up against. Warner amassed 641 runs in 14 games that season at an unbelievable average of 58.27. The season saw the explosive southpaw ramp up 8 fifties and blistering ton yet SRH were unable to make the cut for the playoffs. Warner collected 63 boundaries and 26 sixes as he finished at the top of the list yet again.

2016 – Virat Kohli (RCB), 973 runs

The ninth season of the IPL saw a different version of Virat Kohli as he went on to break numerous records. In a bid to hand Royal Challengers Bangalore their maiden IPL title skipper, Kohli rained hellfire on the bowlers as he scored a whopping 973 runs in 16 games at an unthinkable average of 81.08. Kohli became the only batsman to cross the 900 run mark in the history of the IPL. The star Indian batsman scored commendable 83 fours and 38 sixes as he went on to notch up 7 half-centuries and an astonishing four centuries. despite all the efforts, Kohli and his men failed in the final and had to return empty-handed.

2015 – David Warner (SRH), 562 runs

Captain David Warner led Sunrisers Hyderabad from the front as he went on a hitting spree. The explosive Aussie amassed 562 runs in 14 games at an impressive average of 43.23. Yet again his heroics with the bat failed to sent SRH into the playoffs but he did earn his first Orange Cap. Warner scored 65 fours and 21 sixes in the season as he finished with 7 fifties to his name.

2014 – Robin Uthappa (KKR), 660 runs

Robin Uthappa‘s best IPL season helped Kolkata Knight Riders to their second IPL trophy. The right-hander alone held up the top order saving his skipper Gautam Gambhir a lot of worries. Uthappa registered 660 runs from 16 games at an average of 44 in KKR’s title run. The Karnataka batter hit hammered 74 fours and 18 maximums as he ramped up five fifties in the season.

2013 – Michael Hussey (CSK), 733 runs

Former Australia opener Michael Hussey fired in IPL 2013 as Chennai Super Kings chased their second IPL title only to fail in the final. Hussey led the CSK batting line up with 773 runs in 17 matches at an average of 52.35. The flamboyant Aussie collected 81 boundaries and 17 sixes as he brought up 6 half-centuries. Hussey held the CSK top order together while scoring a strike rate of 129.5.

2012 – Chris Gayle (RCB), 733 runs

West Indies hard hitter Chris Gayle continued his IPL 2011 form as he retained the Orange Cap for the fifth edition of the IPL. Gayle wreaked havoc through every bowling attack he faced as he scored an impressive 733 runs in 17 games but Royal Challengers Bangalore failed to make it to the playoffs. The Windies opener averaged 61.08 in IPL 2012 as he hammered seven fifties and a ton. Gayle scored at the strike rate of 160 as he plundered 46 boundaries and 59 sixes.

2011 – Chris Gayle (RCB), 608 runs

Chris Gayle is renowned for his fearless hitting around the World and he proved his might in the fourth season of the IPL as he bagged his maiden Orange Cap. Gayle scored 608 runs from 12 matches including two hundreds and three fifties to earn the honour. The Windies opener’s fearless hitting propelled Royal Challengers Bangalore into their first-ever final. Gayle’s 57 boundaries and 44 sixes helped RCB finish at the top of the table for IPL 2011.

2010 – Sachin Tendulkar (MI), 618 runs

India’s batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar came to the party in the third season of the IPL. The master blaster scored 618 runs in 15 games to help Mumbai Indians to their maiden IPL final. Tendulkar amassed the runs at an average 47.53 as he hit a record-breaking 86 boundaries and only 3 sixes in the season. To his utter dismay, MI lost to Chennai Super Kings in the final and Tendulkar had to wait three long years to lift the IPL trophy.

2009 – Matthew Hayden (CSK), 572 runs

Explosive Australia opener Matthew Hayden is renowned to tear through bowling line ups early on in the game and this unique ability of his is what placed him atop the Orange Cap list in the second edition of the IPL. Hayden amassed 572 runs in 12 games at an astounding strike rate of 144.81. His hitting spree propelled Chennai Super Kings into their second semifinal in as many seasons. Hayden hammered 60 boundaries and 22 sixes in what was his best season in the league where he scored at an average of 52.

2008 – Shaun Marsh (KXIP), 616 runs

In the inaugural season of the IPL, young Shaun Marsh‘s rise to the top of the Orange Cap list was a big surprise. The Australian was not a big name prior to his impressive stint with the Kings XI Punjab but he made sure the world acknowledged his arrival on the big stage. Marsh aggregated 611 runs from 11 matches at an average of 68.44 as he helped KXIP into the top four. The Southpaw collected 59 boundaries and 26 sixes in the inaugural season as he scored at the strike rate of 139.68
