Maika Batra and Archana Kamath lead India to victory over Sweden

In a nail biting finish Indian women’s team defeated higher ranked Sweden to reach round of 16. Manika Batra won both of her matches while Archana Kamath (WR 135) defeated higher ranked Linda Begstrom (WR 75) to take India to next round.

Indian team didn’t started well as pair of KAMATH Archana Girish/MUKHERJEE Ayhika lost to KALLBERG Christina/EKHOLM Matilda by 3-0.

But Manika Batra kept India in contest as she won second rubber over Bergstorm Linda by 3-1. In second single rubber MUKHERJEE Ayhika tried hard but eventually lost to EKHOLM Matilda by 3-1. At that time Sweden was leading 2-1 and India was in must win situation.

Manika Batra was playing the fourth rubber. She lost the first game by 12-10 but came back to win the second by 11-7. Then she lost the third game and she has to win next game to keep India hopes alive. She won next two game to win the fourth rubber by 3-2.

Both teams were tied at 2-2 and it was upto young Archana Kamath to take India into next round. She started well to win the first game but lost next two. She needed to win next two game now. She won the fourth game by 11-7.

In the last game she was trailing 4-7 then she make it 9-9. Both player were going neck to neck. But Archana Kamath ketp her head cool and finished it with 13-11 to take India to next round. It was a thriller in last 10 minutes.

Now India will face Romania in pre-quarters, where a win means they will book their ticket to Tokyo.
