Manchester City finished their 2019-20 season with a thunderous victory over relegated Norwich City. David Silva says goodbye to the Etihad Stadium after his final Premier League game for the Sky Blues.
In the 11th minute from Raheem Sterling’s low cross, Brazil forward Gabriel Jesus drilled home the winner from close range. The English winger caused chaos on Norwich ‘s night who are already relegated from the top-flight English football.
Kevin de Bruyne extended City’s lead just before the half-time. After icking up Kyle Walker’s pass on the left of the box, De Bruyne twirled in the shot past Norwich’s No 1 Tim Krul to make it 2-0.
Silva in his farewell game was involved in City’s third goal of the night. The Spaniard passed the ball to De Bruyne who in turn played a perfect pass to Raheem Sterling who easily nets it in to make it 3-0. This was Manchester City’s 100th goal of the season.
Riyad Mahrez ‘s replacement put further pressure on Norwich in the 83rd minute. The Algerian with his preferred right-footed shot in the bottom corner further extended the lead. De Bruyne bagged his second of the night in the 90th minute. The Belgian drove a curling right-footed shot past the powerless Norwich defence.
Manchester City end their 2019-2 season with 81 points, 15 points clear of third-placed Manchester United. Norwich finished rock-bottom and gained the unwanted Premier League records of the fewest ever away goals (7). Norwich become the only side in the league history ever to lose every game in which they trailed.
What’s next for Manchester City and Norwich?
Pep Guardiola would now be organizing City for the round-of-16 second leg of the vital Champions League game versus Madrid on August 7. While Norwich City fell down back to the Championship.
