Manchester United clear the air about Luke Shaw’s unsportsmanlike claim about referee Stuart Atwell

The major talking point in a dull game between Manchester United and Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday night was a controversial hand ball decision involving Callum Hudson Odoi and Mason Greenwood.

Referee Stuart Atwell was advised by the video assistant referee to check with the on field monitor and Atwell decided to not give a penalty. Since then a lot has been said about the decision and Atwell as well

Manchester United were at the wrong end of a penalty dedcision

Manchester United coach Ole Gunnar Solskjær went as far as blaming the Chelsea FC official website for instigating the referee! This is ironical as Solskjær is crying at the moment but when Chelsea had a clear cut penalty denied at Old Trafford earlier this season as Harry Maguire decided to play UFC with Cesar Azpillecueta; not many words came out of his mouth.

An extremely illogical and furthermore unsportsmanlike comment was made by left back Luke Shaw from Manchester United who went as far as saying that Stuart Atwell decided to not give the penalty to avoid controversy. He furthermore ‘apparently’ overheard the referee saying to Harry Maguire that it’s a penalty.

Since then Manchester United have come out and issued a statement stating that Luke Shaw misheard and there was no malice intended. Perhaps the club would be better advised to instruct their players to take decisions on field as part and parcel of the game . We don’t see many Manchester United players crying when they are at the positive end of the VAR decisions?

Harry Maguire remonstrates with referee Steve Atwell after the latter decides not to award a penalty

H said they got told it was a pen, he [the referee] got told it was a pen by VAR. So I’m not sure what’s gone on.

‘I don’t understand why he’s stopped, if he’s stopped you would think he’s going to give a pen because we had the ball, we were attacking.

‘So it’s confusing with this VAR because… look, if it’s not going to be a pen they might as well just carry on the game and not stop the flow of the game. But I’m not going to moan about it because like I said, I don’t think either team did enough.’
