“Yes x”: Marcus Rashford confirms Jadon Sancho signing on Twitter?

Marcus Rashford seemingly gave his confirmation of Jadon Sancho signing for Manchester United on Twitter yesterday. Rashford’s initial post was in response to a young fan donning his jersey and posing for the camera. “It’s coming home @England let’s see some more of our fave @MarcusRashford on Sat (feat wrong squad no. courtesy of @KitbagUK)” was the title of the fan’s post, with the emojis of a football, a trophy and the England flag.

Rashford quote-tweeted the fan’s tweet, waving at the young fan with a “Hi buddy”. However, the talking point came when a United fanpage on the platform replied to Rashford’s tweet with “Announce Sancho Marcus”, which is pretty common on footballers’ or journalists’ posts. While many assumed that the page was just stating a popular sentiment and no reply was actually expected, Rashford made a surprising move next.

Rashford replied with a “Yes x” that has sent the fans of the Red Devils into a frenzy. His reply, if true, brings us to the conclusion of a two-year long saga in which Borussia Dortmund and Manchester United have been at loggerheads over the transfer fee of the English international.

While it seemed like United had wrapped up the signing towards the end of last summer, but Dortmund stoutly held on to their asking price and United stuck to their offer too: ending the window on a stalemate. The Old Trafford faithful were left fuming at their club’s inability to sign the player after being linked heavily to the Englishman for a whole season: especially since there were no other clubs bidding for the 21-year-old sensation.

Heading into this window, it was all but finalized that United would be getting the Manchester City academy’s product for a reported fee of around £77 million, especially since Dortmund’s sporting director Michael Zorc said that they had a “gentleman’s agreement” with Sancho that he could leave in this window “under certain conditions”.

Why are United trying to buy Jadon Sancho?

Jadon Sancho
Jadon Sancho has been one of world football’s best wingers in the past few seasons.

Manchester United have long been known for their pacy, skilful wingers: with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, George Best, Steve Coppell Ryan Giggs, Luis Nani, Marcus Rashford, all having either played or currently playing for the club. Since Ronaldo, however, United have had a number of signings for the position that have not met their expectations: including Angel di Maria, Wilfred Zaha and Alexis Sanchez. Heading into the next season, United are looking for that sort of quality and pace on the right flank, a well-known creator who can burst forward on their famous counter-attacks.

Here is where Jadon Sancho fits in: Sancho has been one of world football’s best talents in a while. Capable of playing on either flank or through the centre, but predominantly a right-winger, Sancho has set the stage on fire for Borussia Dortmund ever since signing for the club from Manchester City in 2017. In his following 139 appearances for the club to date, Sancho has 50 goals and 64 assists: making him one of the deadliest players of this period. His best came in the 46 matches he playing alongside Erling Haaland, when the players showed a telepathic connection to combine for goals effortlessly.

Even with an already bulging attacking arsenal of Edinson Cavani, Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood, Dan James, Anthony Martial and Amad Diallo, Sancho would be a regular starter for the club: presumably on the right wing. With the latest confirmation from Rashford, United fans would be waiting eagerly for the next season, and Sancho, to start.
