‘Marnus Labuschagne was phenomenal in Test Cricket’, Ex-Coach Andrew McDonald

Australian former player & Coach Andrew McDonald praised Marnus Labuschagne for holding the third position in the ICC Test Batsmen rankings and said that his growth into the Test number three rank was “phenomenal”.

2019 proved to be a very incredible year for the 25- year old middle-order batman as Labuschagne saw himself running ahead of time to reach at the third position in The ICC Test Rankings for Batsman.

Labuschagne scored 896 runs during home Tests against New Zealand. Former Skipper, Steve Smith played an important role in shaping his incredible growth as Marcus got into the team when he showed his potential as a substitute, in place of Smith when he was injured in last year’s second Ashes Test at Lord’s.

ESPNcricinfo quoted the Ex Australia coach as saying “The real surprise for me, and it’s been pretty well documented, was Marnus. His growth into that Test No.3 postion was phenomenal and great to witness. I’ve done a fair bit of coaching against him at the state level and had never seen the level he has been able to play at and long may it be the case”.

Marnus Labuschange was also awarded with The ICC Men’s Emerging Cricketer and also named among Five Cricketers of the Year by Wisden in Feb, 2020.

Donald believes that Labuschange will be the part of World Cup 2023 in Australian squad as middle order batsman as he said, “he was good in the 50-over matches batting in the middle order, him and Steve, he’s a very good player of spin. So going forward to World Cup 2023 think he’ll be a part of that one-day squad with a view to being on the big stage 2023 assuming all goes well”

“His ability to play spin, fast bowling, rotate strikes, he is good fielder, so there’s a handy package there. A good find for the selectors who persisted with him no one saw that, so full credit to those who picked him.” McDonald concluded.
