Italian Matteo Berrettini produced a marathon performance last evening as he beat the Russian, Aslan Karatsev 6-1 3-6 7-6(0) in over three hours to win the Serbia Open in Belgrade. Incidentally, this was also his first title win of the season.
“It was a really good fight, it’s been a pleasure being here as I came back from injury and I have to thank my team for all their hard work,” Berrettini said courtside after lifting the trophy.
The World No.10 will now shift focus on the upcoming Madrid and Rome Masters next month. The 25-year-old took some time off the tour after the Australian Open exit due to injury.
Berrettini missed tournaments after the Australian Open
Berrettini even missed many tournaments- Rotterdam, Dubai, Acapulco, Doha and the Miami Masters. Upon his return to the tour, he was dumped in the very first round by Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in Monte Carlo.
Speaking about injuries, Berrettini even consulted Rafael Nadal’s doctor, Cotorro on his abdominal issues. As reported by Gazetta, the Italian looked back on the flight from Australia early this year.
“Me and Rafa tend to get injured. We came back from the Australian Open on the same flight. It looked like an hospital plane as he was dealing with a back injury too.”
