Day-7 of the Miami Open 2021 saw the top seeds make their way into the Quarter-Finals. Naomi Osaka, Ash Barty, Elina Svitolina and Aryna Sabalenka all overcame their fourth round opponents in contrasting fashions to complete the feat. Unfortunately for Garbine Muguruza, her tournament ended in the fourth round.
Naomi Osaka stretched her winning streak to twenty three matches
Second seed Osaka beat sixteenth seed Elise Mertens of Belgium, 6-3 6-3, to book her place in the Quarter Finals of the Miami Open 2021. Osaka saved a break point in the first set before winning it 6-3 and then again won the second set 6-3 to complete a relatively comfortable victory.
With this win Osaka extended her winning streak to 23 matches. Her opponent in the Quarter-Finals is Maria Sakkari from Greece.
Ash Barty looks battle hardened
Barty won in a three set encounter against Victoria Azarenka. Azarenka was supposed to challenge Barty and test her mettle, and she did. Barty took the first set with ease, wrapping it up 6-1. Azarenka fought back in the second set and took it 6-1 with relative ease.
The third set was supposed to be the real fight, but that never happened. Barty dominated the set from start to finish to win the set and the match, 6-1 1-6 6-2. Up next for Barty is seventh seed Aryna Sabalenka.
Elina Svitolina overcomes a great challenge
Svitolina defeated Petra Kvitova in an epic three set encounter. Kvitova was the favourite as she was in good form, having won the Qatar Open a few months before. Kvitova in the first set kept going for winners and succeeded more often. Svitolina though couldn’t find her radar one bit, as she kept making errors both on her serve and returns.
From the middle of the second set, Svitolina picked up her level. She started running better, her serve improved and her returns were deeper. Kvitova started making a lot of unforced errors. In the end Svitolina won in three sets, 2-6 7-5 7-5. Svitolina will face Anastasija Sevastova in the Quarters.
Aryna Sabalenka glides into the Quarters
Sabalenka beat Markéta Vondroušová comfortably in straight sets, 6-1 6-2, to advance into the Quarter-Finals. It was a complete performance from Sabalenka. She served well, hit winners on both flanks and never gave a sniff to her opponent.
A comprehensive victory for Sabalenka which was well deserved after the fight she showed in the first few rounds. Her opponent in the next round is top seed Ash Barty.
Muguruza ousted from the tournament
In theory, eighth seed Bianca Andreescu beating twelfth seed Garbine Muguruza should not be an upset win. But if you consider the freezed rankings and with that the current form of Muguruza, it was an upset. The winner of the Dubai Open, and finalist of Qatar, Muguruza was beaten in three sets by Andreescu, 6-3 3-6 2-6.
