India’s top medal prospect Mirabai Chanu bettered her own national record on Tuesday at the ongoing National Weightlifting Championship in Kolkata. She lifted a total 203kg to win Gold in 49kg category and it was also her new personal best after 201kg in World Championship last year.
Mirabai Chanu lifted 88kg in snatch and 115kg in clean and jerk to create three National records. This performance clearly shows that she is in right direction and ready for upcoming Olympics.
After returning from back injury she has lifted 200+ weight twice in last five months. She lifted 199kg in Asian Championship in April last year and breached the 200kg barrier at World championship with a lift of 87kg in snatch and 114kg in clean and jerk, with a total of 201kg.
“She is targeting the 210kg mark, which will strengthen her chances of an Olympic medal. Our target was to lift 203-105kg here, which is achieved. She will be targeting 206-207kg at Asian Championship” said coach Vijay Sharma.
Mirabai Chanu has gathered 3869.80 points in race to Tokyo qualification and have strong chance to make it. She will face strong competition from Chinese and North Korean weightlifters. But there is ample time before Tokyo 2020 and this performance shows her readiness for it.
