Indian cricket team’s captain and an icon of women’s cricket, Mitali Raj reached the huge milestone of having scored 10,000 runs in international cricket. The right-handed batter reached the mark during the third ODI against South Africa at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. She is the first Indian to do so and also the second in the history of the women’s game.

The first to do so was the legendary Charlotte Edwards for England. The now-retired batter finished her career on 10,273 runs in the 309 games that she played. Mithali Raj has played 311 matches at present and looks set to leapfrog Edwards soon and become the leading run-scorer in history. The 38-year-old Raj is also the most capped player in the history of the game with Edwards being the second most.

Sachin Tendulkar congratulates Mithali Raj

The leading run-scorer in men’s cricket, the iconic Sachin Tendulkar took to Twitter today to congratulate Mithali Raj soon after she completed her milestone of 10,000 runs in international cricket. It is noteworthy that with Raj set to overtake Charlotte Edwards’ tally of runs, both the highest run-scorer and the most capped player in international cricket in both men and women would be Indians in Raj and Tendulkar.

Sachin Tendulkar wrote, “Heartiest congratulations Mithali on completing 10,000 runs in international cricket. Terrific achievement. Keep going strong.”

Mithali Raj couldn’t add much to her tally in the third ODI after she achieved the feat as she got out for 36 runs. It was Punam Raut‘s knock of 77 runs that took India to a competitive total of 248/5.
