The ongoing MLB offseason continues to provide intriguing development each passing day. The San Francisco Giants are now looking to bolster their pitching department by bringing in Jordan Hicks.

As per reports from ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Giants are signing him on a four-year $44 million deal. While this would see him make around $11 million a year, the money involved is not what surprises the fans. The thing that has shocked everyone is the team is planning to use him as a potential starter.

A major reason for the amazement from the fans has been the experience of Hicks as a starter. Though he was a regular starter in the minor leagues, he only started eight games for his former side, St Louis Cardinals during the 2022 season.

In that season, Hicks started seven consecutive games in the absence of Jack Flaherty. This run was not a successful one for him as he went 0-4 with a high 5.84 ERA in over 24.2 innings.

He would later find himself on the injured list due to elbow inflammation and return to his normal role as a relief pitcher. The Cardinals would later trade him away to the Toronto Blue Jays in the middle of the 2023 season.

Fan reactions on SF Giants’ potential plan to use Jordan Hicks as starter

After a disappointing campaign in 2023, the San Francisco Giants are hoping to turn things around in the upcoming campaign. New coach Bob Melvin has now set his sights on Jordan Hicks as a potential starter for them in the 2024 season.

Given his track record, the experiment to sign Hicks could go completely wrong for the team. However, the team seems to place their trust in him. This underscores the value the Giants have for him.

Hicks will now be the third player the Giants have signed through free agency this offseason. They previously acquired South Korean superstar Jung Hoo Lee on a six-year deal and catcher Tom Murphy on a two-year deal.
