Tokyo Olympics came to an end, and the host nation must be really proud of their performance in Judo. The Japanese Judo team managed to secure a total of 9 gold medals at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, and they missed their 10th one in the team event. They managed to secure 12 medals in total.

For the men’s division, Naohisa Takato started off the party for the Japanese Judo team with a gold medal at -60kg. It was followed by gold by Hifumi Abe at -66kg. The men’s team completed the hat-trick with gold from Shohei Ono at -73kg. Takanori Nagase continued the streak and banged a gold medal at -81kg. They didn’t get any medal in the -90kg weight category but they bounce back with gold from Aaron Wolf in the -100kg,

In the women’s division, Funa Tonaki lost the gold medal contest in the -48kg weight category and had to settle with silver. Uta Abe dominated her division and got the gold medal at -52kg. Tsukasa Yoshida got the bronze medal in the -57kg weight category, and they didn’t get any medal in -63 kg. Chizuru Arai got the team back on track with a gold medal in the -70kg weight category. Shori Hamada continued the trend with a gold medal at -78kg and Akira Sone ended things on a sweet note with another gold at +78kg.

The head coach for the Japanese Judo team is the Judo legend Kosei Inoue, he has been working tirelessly on the team to get the desired result. Japanese team performed exceptionally well in the individual category but they missed to grab the gold in the inaugural team competition, Inoue was slightly disappointed by this and after the event, he gave his opinion on the same.

“I intend to make further efforts to make good use of my wonderful experience of these nine years in the next stage,” said Inoue.

Teddy Riner of France was in the winning squad at the team event, and he was completely baffled by the situation, “Crazy moment. Crazy day. Crazy Olympic Games. Crazy situation,” said Riner. “It is amazing for the team of France to win here at Budokan during the Olympic Games, it’s wonderful. A gold medal, first edition, it’s nice.”
