Mumbai City FC pip ATK Mohan Bagan to win their maiden Indian Super League title

The Indian Super League finals was played between Mumbai City FC and ATK Mohun Bagan in the Fatorda Stadium in Goa. India’s premier football tournament was conducted fully in Goa in a bio-bubble in order to contain the spread of COVID-19- which would have been exacerbated had the teams been allowed to travel all over the country. With no fans in the stadium, only the players and coaching staff along with the referees were able to witness the last minute winner scored by Bipin Singh.

Bipin Singh scores a last minute winner after goalkeeper error

Bipin Singh made India proud with his intelligence as he pounced on a goalkeeper error and put the ball into the net to aid Mumbai City FC to lift their maiden ISL trophy

ATK Mohun Bagan took the lead in the 18th minute as David Williams scored with a stunning strike which Amrinder Singh couldn’t keep out. The first half was dominated by Antonio Habas’s side, but the domination didn’t amount to much as the scoreline stayed the same. In a moment of misfortune, Jose Luis Espinosa Arroyo aka Tiri headed the ball from a Mumbai City player pass into his own net as his goalkeeper was away from the goalpost. The teams finished the first half on level terms, but Mumbai City FC lost the services of Amey Ranawade.

The Indian defender was stretchered off to the hospital after a collision with ATK Mohun Bagan midfielder Subashish Bose. Mumbai City FC toiled throughout the second half and both teams took a flurry of yellow cards as the match heated up. The match came on its head when Amitabh Battacharya committed a mistake and Mumbai City FC winger Bipin Singh pounced on the ball. He put it in the back of the net and sparked wild celebrations as it was a 90th minute winner and things don’t become better than that.

Mumbai City FC were the second team in ISL history to have topped the table in the league stage while winning the trophy, with the first being Bengaluru FC.
