On this day in 2019, Jasprit Bumrah bowled a marvellous spell of 8-3-7-5 against the West Indies during the 1st Test match in Antigua. On the completion of its first year, Mumbai India remembered this moment with a social media post, applauding Bumrah.
MI’s official handle took on Instagram to post a glimpse from that game with the caption, “? The first Asian bowler to claim a five-for in Australia, England, South Africa, and West Indies ???? #OnThisDay a year ago, Bumrah’s 8-4-7-5 in Antigua ?#OneFamily #MumbaiIndians #MI @jaspritb1”.
Bumrah’s fiery spell came during the second innings, helping India win the match by a massive margin of 318 runs. The first innings didn’t go as per standards of Bumrah as he managed to take just a solitary wicket. He ended the game with the match figures of 26-8-62-6.
Record-smashing spell
In his process of ripping the opposition apart in the second innings, Bumrah claimed the majority of his wickets of the top-order batsmen. His first scalp came in the form of Kraigg Brathwaite in his first over itself. Following that, the 26-year old went to claim the wickets of John Campbell, Darren Bravo, Sahi Hope, and Jason Holder.
With this performance, Bumrah not only became the first Asian bowler to claim a fifer in Australia, England, South Africa, and Windies but shattered other records as well. He also became the record-holder for becoming the fastest Indian bowler to reach 50 Test wickets (11 Tests).
Buumrah also surpassed all the Asians to become the first Asian to claim a five-for while conceding less than ten runs in a Test inning. With this spell, he also joined the list of Indians who hold the record claiming five wickets in a bowling spell of fewer than ten overs.
