‘My action will speak louder than words’: Chetan Sharma, BCCI’s newly-appointed chairman selector

After waiting for several months, the BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) finally shortlisted the three selectors to fill vacant positions. Former Indian speedster Chetan Sharma was on Thursday appointed as the chairman of the senior national selection panel. The 54-year old replaced the interim chief selector Sunil Joshi to head the five-member team.
The new selection panel was formed on the sidelines of the Board’s 89th Annual General Meeting (AGM). Sharma pipped the likes of Maninder Singh, Vijay Dahiya, Nikhil Chopra and Ajay Ratra from the North Zone. On the other hand, Mumbai’s Abey Kuruvilla and Odisha’s Debashish Mohanty got selected from the West and East zones respectively.
“It’s indeed a privilege for me to get an opportunity to serve Indian cricket once again. I am a man of few words, and my action will speak louder than words,” Chetan Sharma told PTI on his appointment.

“I can only thank BCCI for this opportunity,” the former pacer, who has a five-wicket haul at Lord’s in a Test match added.
Chetan Sharma takes over Sunil Joshi on seniority grounds

Sharma represented the national side in 23 Tests and 65 ODIs spanning almost 11 years. On the other hand, the current chairman of selectors, Sunil Joshi retired with 15 Tests and 69 ODIs to his name. The highlight of Joshi’s 11-year-old international career was the hat-trick in the 1987 World Cup. He also holds the record for becoming the first Indian to achieve this feat in a WC. At the age of 16, Sharma started playing First-Class cricket for Haryana before making his Test debut at 18.
“The committee further recommended Chetan Sharma for the role of chairman of the senior men’s selection committee based on seniority (total number of Test matches). The CAC will review the candidates after a one-year period and make the recommendations to the BCCI,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah said in a press release.
