Naomi Osaka returned to action this week for the first time after the Miami Open 2021, where she was defeated in the quarterfinals by Maria Sakkari. The Japanese entered the Madrid Open 2021, as the second seed, and was one of the favorites to win the tournament.
However, as things went by, Osaka suffered a three set defeat against Karolina Muchova in the second round of the Madrid Open. The Japanese lost the first set, but came storming back into the match, winning the second set. She failed to replicate her performance in the third set, as Muchova overpowered her opponent on Sunday. The world number two was disappointed with the loss, but hopes to work harder for the next tournament.
I’ll keep putting my head down and working hard: Naomi Osaka
Naomi Osaka stated that she would take some lessons from her defeat, and work even harder. She also acknowledged her support staff, and was pleased to have them around.
“Caught an L today but beyond happy with how hard I fought and very grateful for the team I have around me. I already know something good is coming for me so I’ll keep putting my head down and working hard. Tomorrow is a new day! Thank you guys for the support,“ she wrote on Twitter.
Naomi Osaka is now expected to compete at the Italian Open next week, which will be a final step in her preparations for the French Open. The Japanese has played just four tournaments this season, and has claimed one title so far. She won the Australian Open 2021 title, defeating Jennifer Brady in the finals.
