“I went to play with Vince” Jalen Rose details dispute between Toronto Raptors and Vince Carter

Jalen Rose and Vince Carter

Vince Carter was the undisputed superstar in Toronto and had Michael Jordan kind of status in Canada. One of the reasons, apart from his unmatched athleticism, he was known as “Air Canada” among the Toronto Raptors fans. Due to some heated back-and-forth, Carter’s feud with the organization led to a bitterly disappointing trade to the New Jersey Nets. Jalen Rose detailed his displeasure with the Raptors for later trading Vince.

Rose appeared upset recalling the past. He said that one of the reasons that he was not happy with the organization was the Vince carter trade to the New Jersey Nets. “The one thing I hated about my experience in Toronto is that they traded Vince,” Rose said. Rose also said that the organization was leaking information about Carter’s mother’s parking location to the media.

During his appearance on “All The Smoke,” Rose made a quick reference to his time with the Raptors. Rose stated that his desire to play alongside Carter was a factor in his excitement to join the Raptors. “That’s why I went. To play with Vince,” Rose said. The former NBA player also said that during the dispute, the organization and the coaching staff also stopped playing through Carter. “Give Vince the ballY’all know he can shoot, [he is] crazy athletic, he’s unstoppable. Get him going downhill,” he said.

Rose criticized then Raptors General Manager Rob Babcock for not trading Carter for another player who has the potential to be a superstar and could replace Carter’s caliber on the court. Rose said that Toronto did not trade for players like Jason Kidd or Richard Jefferson, pointing out that Alonzo Mourning had previously decided against playing for Toronto. “They did a trade to the Nets. I was like was it for Jason Kidd, and Richard Jefferson? And Alonzo already said he wasn’t going to Toronto,” remarked Jalen.

Carter was a hero in Toronto, but he quickly turned into Raptor fans’ most hated villain when he forced his trade to the Nets on Dec. 17, 2004. The reports said that Carter was disillusioned with the Raptors organization and stopped putting effort on the court. Perhaps fans got even more upset with the trade. Alonzo Mourning, Aaron Williams, Eric Williams and two first-round draft picks rubbed salt in their wound.

When Carter came back to play against the Raptors on April 15, 2005, there was a wide roar of “V-C sucks!” in the arena. Over 177 games with the Toronto Raptors, Jalen Rose averaged 6.2 points per game. However, due to Carter and Toronto’s dispute, his career with the organization largely remained overshadowed and underappreciated.
